These Baked Sweet Potato Slices are so simple and make a delicious side dish! Here I share a basic recipe and 2 additional options - one savory and one sweet!
As a dietitian, I love having a few easy healthy side dish recipes up my sleeve that I can adjust slightly based on what I'm serving it with. These baked sweet potato slices are a perfect side dish on their own, or you can add a few extra ingredients to take them up a notch.
I recently went to a Friendsgiving hosted by my friend who is gluten-free and I wanted to bring an appetizer she could enjoy. So I decided to use these sweet potato rounds as a base to hold various toppings similar to how you can serve crostini with a dip or toppings as a holiday appetizer. I topped them with Whipped Ricotta and a Date & Pecan mixture and they were a big hit!
Bring them to the Thanksgiving table like me, or use this recipe as a super easy side dish on a busy weeknight to serve with roast chicken or salmon! However you decide to serve them, I hope you enjoy this recipe! 😊
This was inspired by my Air Fryer Sweet Potatoes Cubes, another sweet potato side dish. If you're looking for holiday recipes, try my Pecan Crusted Sweet Potato Casserole!

Key Ingredient Notes and Substitutions
This Baked Sweet Potato Rounds recipe uses simple ingredients. Below are some ingredient notes. Check the recipe card for exact ingredient measurements.
Basic Recipe
Here are the main ingredients that you'll need. You can use just these ingredients and they make a great addition to any meal! But if you want even more flavor, there are 2 more options below to choose from.
- Sweet Potatoes - there are hundreds of kinds of sweet potatoes! I use a jewel variety of sweet potato which has orange flesh and is a go-to for baking or roasting. An easy way to select a good sweet potato at the grocery store is to choose ones that are firm. Store your sweet potatoes in a dry place. According to the US Sweet Potato Council, storing them in the fridge can give them an unpleasant taste. Cutting whole sweet potato into rounds gives you a lot of surface area to add seasonings and toppings.
- Extra Virgin Olive Oil - extra virgin olive oil is olive oil in its purest form (least processed) so it retains all the antioxidants and nutrients from the olive itself. Olive oil is high in oleic acid, a monounsaturated fat that can reduce inflammation and has been shown to improve brain health. In this recipe, a little olive oil helps to keep the sweet potatoes from drying out. If you prefer a more mild flavor, you can use avocado oil or your favorite cooking oil instead.
- Salt & Black Pepper - to enhance the flavor and texture of the potato while it roasts.
Sweet Option
If you want an option to serve these sweet potato rounds with a sweeter flavor, here are the additional ingredients you will need:
- Maple Syrup - you only need a small amount of maple syrup to bring out the natural sweetness of the potato.
- Cinnamon - a bit of cinnamon pairs wonderfully with sweet potatoes and maple.
Savory Option
If you want an option to serve these sweet potato rounds with a more savory flavor, here are the additional ingredients you will need:
- Garlic Powder - just a bit of garlic powder adds a ton of flavor. You can use fresh garlic if you prefer.
- Fresh Thyme - fresh herbs add color and brighten up the potatoes. I use fresh thyme leaves. You can add a small amount of rosemary or sage if you want. Or use parsley and add it at the end after they come out of the oven.
- Italian Seasoning - an easy way to add a combination of dried herbs.
How to Make Baked Sweet Potato Rounds
Below are step-by-step photos for how to make this sweet potato recipe that I hope are helpful! Don't forget to check out the recipe card at the bottom for the full recipe.
- Step 1: Preheat the oven to 425℉ (218°C). Spray a parchment-lined large baking sheet or baking dish with cooking spray to prevent the sweet potato rounds from sticking. Parchment paper makes for easy clean-up! Give the sweet potatoes a good rinse. You can remove the skin if you want to, but I keep the skin on for more texture and dietary fiber. Slice the potato widthwise into thin pieces using a sharp knife. The size of your slices will be based on personal preference. Some people prefer thick rounds. I personally like mine a bit thinner.
- Step 2: Pile the sliced sweet potatoes in the center of the prepared baking sheet. Top with olive oil, salt & black pepper, and other toppings. Using your hands, make sure each sweet potato slice is well coated on both sides. If you prefer, you can do this part in a large bowl.
- Step 3: Line the sweet potatoes in a single layer side by side. Be sure they are in a single layer so they cook evenly! Bake in the preheated oven for 30-40 minutes, flipping halfway through. Cooking time will vary depending on the size of your slices and your oven. The sweet potatoes are done cooking when they are a golden brown color.
Hint: for best results, be sure to line the sweet potatoes in an even layer that don't overlap. You may need to do a couple of batches depending on how large your baking sheet or sheet pan is.
Dietitian Tip
When it comes to making a perfect side dish, sometimes simple is the way to go! You can use sweet potato slices like this as a base for toppings or enjoy them as they are. Since the potato itself is sweet and almost caramelizes in the oven when roasted, you really don't need much else - just a few simple ingredients to enhance their flavor and texture!
Variations
One of the best things about making sweet potato rounds at home is you can customize them however you want! Below are some ideas, but feel free to get creative!
- Spicy - add red pepper flakes, cayenne, or chili powder to give these sweet potato rounds a little kick!
- Deluxe - serve them with a dip like whipped ricotta or tahini yogurt sauce to take things up a notch.
- Cheesy - add parmesan cheese or mozzarella cheese on top if you like cheesy potatoes.
- Sweet Potato "Crostinis" - use them as a GF alternative for bread and serve them as an appetizer with a dip or toppings.
- Sweet Potato Toasts - serve them for breakfast with avocado, eggs, feta, and a drizzle of chili oil!
- Sweet Potato Fries - instead of rounds, cut the sweet potatoes into long strips to make sweet potato wedges or fries!
Storage
Refrigerator - store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3-4 days.
Expert Tips
- Bake the sweet potato rounds in a single layer. You may need to do them in batches depending on the size of your baking sheet.

FAQ
While healthy means something different to everyone, these sweet potato slices are a nutrient-rich option. Sweet potatoes provide dietary fiber for a healthy gut and also contain antioxidants, vitamin A & vitamin C, potassium, and manganese. The extra-virgin olive oil provides heart-healthy fats that also support hormone health and brain health.
Sweet Potatoes don't crisp up like regular potatoes. They will be more of a caramelized, soft consistency. But you can make them more crisp by cutting them into thinner slices and cooking a bit longer.
