Key Ingredient Notes and Substitution Ideas
This apple cider mocktail is made with simple ingredients. Below are some ingredient notes. Check the recipe card at the bottom for measurements.

- Apple CiderΒ - this is the key ingredient that gives this drink a sweet apple flavor. Β And it's more natural than apple juice. But if you have apple juice on hand, you can substitute using apple juice.
- Ginger Beer -Β I use zero sugar ginger beer made with pressed fresh ginger root. Β You could also use regular ginger beer or ginger ale, but it will have added sugar and more calories. Sparkling water or club soda will work to add bubbles, but don't have as much flavor.
- Lemon JuiceΒ - use fresh lemon juice if possible. It tastes better than lemon juice from a bottle. Lime juice works here too.
- Ground CinnamonΒ - a dash of cinnamon levels up the flavor. Plus, it contains antioxidants.Β
How to Make an Apple Mocktail
There's two ways you can make this apple mocktail with just a couple easy steps. Below are the instructions for how to make it.
- If you have cocktail shaker: add ice to your shaker. Then add the apple cider, ginger beer, and fresh squeezed lemon juice. Shake well. Pour into a glass over ice and sprinkle cinnamon on top. Garnish with an apple slice and cinnamon sticks.
- If you don't have a shaker: If you don't have a shaker or don't feel like pulling it out and creating another dish to wash, just pour the apple cider, ginger beer, and squeeze of lemon juice in a glass over ice and stir. Then top with cinnamon. Garnish with an apple slice and cinnamon sticks.
Dietitian Tip
If you're looking to cut back on alcohol, mocktails are a great option! I like to pour one while I cook dinner and using a fun glass makes it a little more special.
Variations of Apple Mocktail
- FancyΒ - if you want to level up this mocktail, add a cinnamon sugar rim or a thyme sprig to the rim of the glass for garnish!
- SpicyΒ - if you prefer a spicy flavor in your alcohol free drinks, add a dash of cayenne pepper.
- AlcoholicΒ - if you want to turn this mocktail into a cocktail, do so by adding a shot of vodka or replacing the apple cider with hard cider.Β

Expert Tips
- If possible, use freshly squeezed lemon instead of bottled lemon juice.
- Try to find a local apple cider and if you want real apple cider, avoid anything labeled "apple juice".
- Use a zero calorie ginger beer to cut back on added sugars and calories.
